Laurie & Sons is committed to world solutions to poverty and hunger.  We seek ways to promote education about nutrition and gender equality in agriculture.

Mission to Malawi

Laurie and sons, Johnny & Andrew, recently returned from Malawi where they worked with Villages in Partnership to help villagers in the Sakata district, a catchment of 21 villages.  There were highs - working at the maize mill, visting a school yard where we were thronged by students excited by our visit, Johnny playing soccer in a friendship game and their were lows - visiting an aged villager at his hut who only wished for some gloves to keep warm at night, seeing the coffin shop in town next to the grocery store, realizing that there was so much more to be done.  The positive end result, though, was seeing how a little bit of information -- how to preserve food during the rainy season, for example, can make a huge difference in the day to day lives of these people.

Meeting with Oxfam

We met with Oxfam last month to get an update on pay equity for women cocoa farmers.  They are also working hard to raise the visibility of African women in agriculture and to give them more of a voice in the supply chain.  As part of this effort, a select number of women farmers are due to visit the U.S. this October.

Oxfam is a global organization working to right the wrongs of poverty, hunger, and injustice. As one of 17 members of the international Oxfam confederation, we work with people in more than 90 countries to create lasting solutions. Oxfam saves lives, develops long-term solutions to poverty, and campaigns for social change.

The Oxfam vision: A just world without poverty.

The Oxfam mission: To create lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and social injustice.
